After Sunday Nights 31-19 opening day loss to the Denver Broncos, the Pittsburgh Steelers have returned home to regroup prior to their home opener against the New York Jets on Sunday. While they have numerous areas to tie up, one area of considerable concern is the growing injury list.
During the first half of their loss, the team lost two starting offensive linemen to injury, with Ramon Foster (eye) and Marcus Gilbert (knee) both finishing the game on the sideline. At this point, neither injury appears to be overly serious; their absence has the ability to decimate the offensive line, leaving only six healthy linemen. These injuries could also play havoc to a offense in its infancy, and one that again struggled in the Red Zone last night, scoring touchdowns on only two of four trips into the zone. Of course, these Red Zone deficiencies may also be tied to the lack of a consistent push in the running game from starter Isaac Redman, who was completely outplayed by Jonathan Dwyer in last nights game.
If these struggles continue in the running game (especially with Redman), it will be interesting to see what adjustments the Steelers make moving forward as former starter Rashard Mendenhall continues to recover from his ACL injury.
