After reducing their roster to 53 players on Friday, the Pittsburgh Steelers filled out their initial 2012 practice squad by signing eight players. Of the eight, all were members of the team during preseason and one was a 2012 draft choice.
Not surprisingly, the team inked wide receiver David Gilreath and safety Damon Cromartie-Smith, both players who looked like that had positioned themselves in a place to make the final 53-man roster. In fact, it came as somewhat of a surprise that the team released both of them, deciding to keep only four wide receivers and four safeties on the roster. The other players were 2012 seventh round pick wide receiver Toney Clemons, offensive linemen John Malecki and Ryan Lee, linebacker Marshall McFadden, tight end Jamie McCoy and cornerback Josh Victorian.
The Steelers will likely make at least one more move prior to the start of the season on Tuesday, when the new injured reserve list can be populated. In looking at the cuts, it would not be surprising to see the team place rookie David DeCastro (knee) on the 8-game injured reserve and then sign veteran Trai Essex to the active roster.
