Sunday was a competitive and challenging day for the Pittsburgh Steelers at training camp in Latrobe. While the highlight of this practice would usually be the goal line drill which pits the number ones on offense and defense against each other (today’s was reportedly dominated by the defense), today was different.
The action in practice was again of the spirited and physical nature, highlighted by a couple of altercations between Pro Bowlers cornerback Ike Taylor and wide receiver Antonio Brown. In fact, these two stalwarts seemed to be at each others throat from the word go.However, the biggest news coming from these workouts was that the already thin Steelers running back stable might have lost another competitor as second-year back John Clay was carted off the field with what is termed a groin/hip injury. While there was no update on the severity of the injury, the team could not afford another serious injury at this point of the season.
With Rashard Mendenhall on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list recovering from his torn ACL, and projected starter Isaac Redman (groin) and top back up Jonathan Dwyer (shoulder) nicked up, the Steelers are cutting it close on bodies, especially with their attempt to rebuild the rushing attack in 2012.
This goal already suffered one major loss when veteran fullback David Johnson was lost for the season with a torn ACL in the preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, This injury left inexperienced Will Johnson in the lead for the fullback position as camp continues.
