The Pittsburgh Steelers finished off their first set of practices today with what is being called a competitive and spirited practice at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe focusing offensively on the short passing and running games. These two elements of the offense have been a hot topic since new offensive coordinator Todd Haley was brought in.
This style of offense may become more important as the standoff between the team and Mike Wallace continues. While the combination of Antonio Brown, Jerricho Cotchery and Emmanuel Sanders will be effective, having a receiver to take the top off the defense could be a huge benefit in stretching the field. Sanders was given the day off as a precaution as the team practiced on turf, but his heath will be key moving forward without Wallace in the fold.Besides Sanders and the six players who opened the season on the Physically Unable to Perform List (PUP), tight end Heath Miller is still out with his minor ankle injury. His absence is creating a solid competition at tight end, making the pending outcome of Weslye Saunders appeal of his four-game suspension more intriguing.
While there were a couple of bumps and bruises with guards David DeCastro and Trai Essex suffering minor ankle injuries (listed as day-to-day), the real news was about the shoulder injury to veteran cornerback Keenan Lewis. Listed as an AC Sprain, with no word on the extent or definitive timetable for his return; this injury could create an even more spirited battle for the cornerback position opposite Ike Taylor between Lewis, Curtis Brown and Cortez Allen.
