The Pittsburgh Steelers again showing a touch of life in free agency. Sources are reporting that veteran tight end Leonard Pope, (6-8, 265 pounds)will be visiting the Steelers facilities today, becoming the second known unrestricted free agent to do so. Pope is an interesting prospect, who is familiar with new Offensive Coordinator Todd Haley’s schemes, spending his entire six-year career with Haley in both Arizona and Kansas City. Drafted in the third round of the 2006 NFL Draft, Pope has recorded 101 receptions for 973 yards and nine touchdowns in his career.
The Steelers are thin at tight end behind starter Heath Miller, as projected back-up and second-year pro Wesleye Saunders is facing a four-game suspension to start the season after violating the leagues substance abuse testing program and the team may be more concerned about the position than some experts believe. Pope is the second veteran tight end the team has been linked with during this offseason and today Missouri TE Michael Egnew also making a pre-draft visit. Ironically, many scouting services view Pope and Egnew as somewhat similar players with former Missouri tight end being compared favorably to the veteran as he makes his way through the pre-draft process.
Besides Egnew, two other college prospects made their way to the facility for pre-draft visits today in Regina defensive tackle Akiem Hicks and hybrid defensive end / outside linebacker Nick Perry from USC. With the addition of these three prospects, the Steelers have reached the halfway point of the allotted 30 pre-draft visitors. As we have started with a handful of prospects, our goal at Steelers101 is to profile all of the Steelers pre-draft visitors. The players are:
