Loading ...After dissecting the Pittsburgh Steelers roster over the past few days, it is clear that most of their need is truly on the offensive side of the ball. With so many holes, they cannot afford to reach in any round for need, and should definitely select the best offensive player available. By having only seven draft choices, there may be some picks that go against the grain in the minds of some of the experts, or fans, but in the end remember, GM Kevin Colbert is one of the best. Today, Steelers 101 will continue to look at some potential players that could be a fit in the Black and Gold.
Of all of the areas on offense that need addressed, the offensive line appears to be the biggest. It would not be surprising to see the Steelers draft multiple offensive linemen early in the draft if things fall the right way. In OG/OT Kelechi Osemele, from Iowa State, they would find a large 6-6, 330-pound run blocker, who could possibly contribute early in his career. A Left Tackle in college, Osemele has the size and arm length to play outside, but seems to lack the foot quickness to stay there in the NFL, and his powerful game projects more to guard. While he is a good athlete with pass blocking skills, his best attribute may be as a road-grader that could help add some power-running attitude to the Steelers finesse offensive schemes.
It is easy to see Colbert and Mike Tomlin pulling the trigger on this type of player; especially when you weigh the combination of Steelers needs, his experience and potential position flexibility. Osemele is currently projected somewhere in the second round of the upcoming draft, and would be a huge value at that point. If interested, the Steelers may be able to pull a trade, and pick up an extra pick by moving down to the end of round one or early round two and grab him.
