Although Pittsburgh Pirates' pitching has regressed during the month of May, the offense, owner of the third highest OPS and the highest OBP in the National League over the month, has been at the forefront of the Pirates climb back towards .500.

An offense that finished in the bottom three of the NL in hits, doubles, triples, batting average, OBP, slugging percentage and OPS has seen a complete turnaround over the second month of the season after Starling Marte was dropped in the order, Ike Davis began hitting for average and Josh Harrison started his recent tear.

The Pirates offense leads the NL in hits, triples and OBP during May, scoring the fourth-most runs with the second-most steals and second-highest batting average.

Conversely, although the team is 13-11 over the month, the pitching has been amongst the worst in the NL. After finishing April with a 3.81 team ERA, good for just 11th in the league, the team has posted a 4.06 ERA in May, third-worst in the league. The staff finds itself in the bottom three in hits and home run allowed, batting average against and runs allowed.
