The Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-2 last night and took the first of a home-and-home series against their new Metropolitan Division rival. The Penguins found powerplay success going 2-4 with the man advantage thanks to tallies from Chris Kunitz and Kris Letang. Pumpkin-shirt-wearing sensation Jayson Megna also scored for the Pens along with Brandon Sutter, who has two goals in the last two games.
On his recent scoring touch, Sutter said, "It's definitely one of those things that sometimes it goes in, sometimes it doesn't. Fortunately, the last couple nights, it has. I don't pay too much attention to trying to go in and score goals all of the time. I just worry about my game. It's nice to get a couple and kind of get the monkey off the back and hopefully try to stay hot."
The Penguins ran reigning Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky out of Columbus's net five minutes into the second period. Bobrovsky, who's had success against the Pens when he wore a Flyers sweater, gave up three goals on ten shots. His replacement, Chris McElhinney saw thirteen shots and allowed the Jayon Megna goal. No word on who the Blue Jackets will start in net Saturday.
The goaltending for the Penguins was a different story as Marc-Andre Fleury was, again, brilliant. Flower stopped thirty-seven shots in his tenth win of the season and now leads in the NHL in that category. His postseason troubles and speculated offseason departure are things of the past. Well, at least until April.
Fleury said of the game, "They got a few shots right away. It's good to get into the game. They're a good team and they play hard. A little action makes it fun."
Dan Bylsma said of his netminder, "I thought Marc-Andre was without question the best player on the ice tonight. They had a couple flurries on their power play, some great chances to score, and he was very good, very strong, and he was the difference in the game."
The Pens and Jackets do it again tonight. Puck drops at 7:00pm.
