Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi had ankle surgery Tuesday and will miss 6-8 weeks while recovering. The 34-year old American injured his ankle in Saturday's contest against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Aside from playing time and game checks, the injury ended Scuderi's consecutive start streak at 276 games.
The injury occured when Leafs forward David Clarkson (making his season debut since serving a 10-game suspension) shoulder-checked Scuderi into the boards and lose control of his foot, which landed on the aforementioned ankle. Scuds left the game and now is out for almost two months.
Signed in the offseason to a four-year $13.5 million dollar deal, the plan was for Scuderi to bolster the Pens defensive core and free up Kris Letang for offensive rushes. A good plan. Scuderi's spot on the ice will be taken by Matt Niskanen, who is having a standout year so far (eight points and a plus-10 rating).
Also from the injury front, newly signed forward Chuck Kobasew will be out 3-4 weeks with a lower body injury suffered in Monday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Kobasew was brought in during training camp to fill depth at forward and played his way onto the Pens after Matt D'Agostini landed on IR. Kobasew scored two goals in the first game and has not found the stat-book since.
On a bright spot, Beau Bennett skated for the second straight day . . . so there's that.
