The Pittsburgh Penguins go oh-for-two in the prospects tournament after a 4-3 shootout lose to the mini-Toronto Maple Leafs yesterday inside the Budweiser Gardens. For the optimists out there, the team should feel better about this defeat after their disappointing opener Thursday; a 4-1 drumming courtesy of the Ottawa Senators.
Another silver lining, is the buzz generated by Pens right winger Tom Kuhnhackl. The 6'2", 21-year old German scored the game tying goal with 19.6 seconds left. But wait, there's more. With a dramatic flare, Kuhnhackl's shot was so hard (this is where you say, 'how hard was it?') the puck tore through the netting. Kuhnhackl, a self-described diehard Pens fan, was drafted by the team in 2010 and has 68 points (39 goals and 29 assists) in 63 career OHL games.
Regarding his goal, Kuhnhackl mused, “It just felt great. I didn’t have a good game, so it was just good to get on the board and at least make it to OT and the shootout. It’s nice just to be out there and coach Hynes gives me the confidence to be out there and just try to help the team.”
Jayson Megna and Scott Harrington tallied the other goals, but none has cinematic as Kuhnhackl's.
Again, netminder duties were split evenly. Matt Murray started the game and was relieved by Eric Hartzell seven minutes into the second. Murray gave up one goal while Hartzell allowed the other three.
Defensemen Scott Harrington and Derrick Pouliot are making strong cases for roster spots with their tournament performances. Both are playing sound defense and are making life easy for forwards with smart passes. Pouliot had the assist on the Kuhnhackl goal. Keep your eyes on this duo during training camp and the preseason.
The last game of the tournament is September 8th against the Chicago Blackhawks prospects at 2:00pm.
