The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced next season's promotional schedule and, yes readers, the slow news days of the dwindling offseason continue in force.
The absolute best of the thirteen giveaway nights happens January 20th against the Florida Panthers. Trib Total Media will be handing out Dan Bylsma USA Hockey Coach bobbleheads. There is no picture released for the design yet, but the toys should like prettier than the Team USA jerseys. That night will be the only bobblehead night of the season, so collectors need to grab tickets to this one. Now. Hurry!
(A brief history of bobbleheads . . . because they're so darn popular. Modern bobbleheads first appeared in the 1950s and by the 1960s, Major League Baseball made a series of papier-mache bobblehead dolls, one for each team, all with the same cherubic face. The first player-specific bobbleheads were also a baseball deal and consisted of Roberto Clemente, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, and Willie Mays. As the decades went by, bobbleheads drew inspiration from other sports, cartoons, and television shows. Cal Ripken Jr is said to have the most expensive bobblehead for collectors. A 2001 All-Star edition of his likeness fetches around $700 a pop. And that concludes our brief history of bobbleheads.)
Other noteworthy promotions include a Penguins baseball cap (November 18th), a Penguins flag (March 18th), and a reused tote (March 11th). The texting gloves (December 16th) and drawstring bag (March 25th) are strong candidates to be thrown on the ice if a player scores a hat trick . . . ala Chris Kunitz and sock monkey night.
The fan favorite 'Shirts Off Our Backs' game will be against the Ottawa Senators on April 13th. The rest of the schedule can be found here. Regular season tickets go on sale Friday, September 6th.
