Cleveland Cavaliers Trade Rumors: Kyrie Irving Edition

The NBA has been buzzing with trade rumors ever since it was announced that Kyrie Irving had requested a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers. The latest reports, which appeared Friday morning, said the Phoenix Suns would trade point guard Eric Bledsoe, young big-man Dragan Bender, and a first-round pick in exchange for Irving.

The proposed deal makes sense for both sides. The Suns would get the 25-year-old Irving, who fits better into their playoff timeline than the 27-year-old Bledsoe. On the other hand, Bledsoe is a consistent scorer, and a far better defender than Irving.  Irving and Devin Booker would form a formidable backcourt, while the Cavaliers would receive a player to help them win this season, and young talent for a rebuild if James should depart.

While the general framework of the trade works, the problem, from Cleveland’s end, is the inclusion of Bender as the young piece. Bender struggled mightily last season, averaging only 3.4 points and 2.4 rebounds per game on 35.4% shooting. He had trouble staying on the floor for extended periods of time and looked largely overexposed in his first NBA season.

Bender is still just 19 years of age and only one year removed from being selected with the fourth pick in the draft. He certainly has potential, but there is a lot of risk in hoping that he develops well, as the forward/center is …
