The Philadelphia Phillies designated pitcher Tyler Cloyd for assignment today, effectively placing him on waivers. He was then claimed off of waivers by the Cleveland Indians, ending his tenure in a Phillies uniform.
Cloyd struggled mightily at times this year, especially late in the season. Over 11 starts in the 2013 season, Cloyd pitched 60 and 1/3 innings, posting a 2-7 record with a 6.56 ERA and 41 strikeouts. He made his Phillies debut on August 29th, 2012, and compiled a 2-2 record with a 4.91 ERA in 2012.
While he looked good in his first several outings of the season, Cloyd had major control problems as he began to accumulate starts. He had a steady decline, and was called on sporadically throughout the season. He was demoted to triple-A Lehigh Valley a couple of times, and was recalled only due to injuries in the starting rotation.
Relief pitcher Raul Valdes was also placed on waivers and claimed by another team. Valdes was picked up by the Houston Astros. The Cuban reliever posted a 1-1 record with a 7.46 ERA in 17 appearances in 2013.
