The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Miami Marlins tonight in south Florida by a score of 2-1. The Phillies, who have lost their last four games, get the win in the second game of this three game series between NL East rivals – the next to last series of the season. Zach Miner got the nod for the Phillies tonight, while Henderson Alvarez started for the Marlins. Miner was only slated to go a few innings, as tonight was another "bullpen night" of sorts, and Miner allowed just one run in four innings. The bullpen shut the door the rest of the way to give the Michael Stutes and the Phillies the win.
All of the scoring by both teams came in the first two innings. In the first inning, Darin Ruf drew a walk with the bases loaded to push home Jimmy Rollins and give the Phillies the 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Kevin Frandsen drove in Chase Utley from third on a groundout to put the Phillies up 2-0. A second-inning Justin Ruggiano double is all the Marlins managed off of Miner and the Phillies bullpen tonight, who together allowed just 7 hits and the one run.
Five pitchers saw action for the Phillies tonight – Miner, Michael Stutes, J.C. Ramirez, Jake Diekman, and Jonathan Papelbon. Stutes made his first appearance since he went to the disabled list in late June, pitching a clean fifth inning. Ramirez allowed one hit over two frames, while Diekman gave up a hit in his one inning of work. Miner's final line for the night was 4 innings pitched, 4 hits, one run, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Papelbon came in and pitched a scoreless ninth for his 29th save of the season, giving up just one hit. This allowed Stutes to pick up his third win of the year on his first night back to major league action in 3 months.
On the other side, Henderson Alvarez pitched well for Miami, going 7 innings, allowing just 5 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, and 5 strikeouts. His lack of run support was not enough, however, to bring home the win for Miami tonight. The Phillies improve to 72-85 with the win, as the Marlins drop their 100th game, the first time they've lost that many games in a season since 1998.
These two teams meet for the last time in 2013 tomorrow as Cole Hamels and Brad Hand take the mound for their respective teams. The Phils have just 5 games remaining in what has been a very disappointing season. 2013 is set to go down as a season with the least wins since 2000.
