On a night where Cliff Lee reached 200 strikeouts on the season for the third straight year, the Phillies gave him more than enough run support to down the lowly Miami Marlins in tonight's NL East battle from Philadelphia. Lee was extremely sharp tonight, striking out 14 batters in 8 innings, while helping himself out by posting career numbers at the plate. Lee went 3 for 4 with a career-high 4 RBI and a triple, leading the Phillies both offensively and defensively. Marlins starter Sam Dyson had an opposite type of night, as he was chased from the game after just 2 and 2/3 innings, allowing 7 runs.
Five different Phillies had multi-hit games, and five different Phillies drove in runs. Lee was not the only one with 4 RBI's on the night, as Chase Utley had a 2 for 5 night, cranking a three run home run in the bottom of the third inning, his 17th of the year. Cesar Hernandez, Darin Ruf, and Cody Asche also drove in runs on the evening to cap off the 12-run onslaught. Ruf added his 14th home run of the season in the sixth inning, a two-run shot. The 12-run, 14-hit outing by the Phillies was the most offensive production the team has had since August 8th.
While Lee had a monster night at the plate, becoming just the second pitcher in the major leagues this year to pick up 4 RBI, he showed his familiar domination on the mound. With a season-high 14 strikeouts, Lee won his 14th game of the season. Lee did allow 2 runs and 8 hits on the evening, with Adeiny Hechavarria and Justin Ruggiano bringing home runs for Miami. Marlins starter Sam Dyson allowed 7 runs and 4 walks in 2 and 2/3 innings, helping the Phillies tonight to their 70th win of the season.
The Phillies, who have just 12 games left in the season, climb to 70-80 on the year, while the last-place Marlins fall farther down into the NL East cellar at 55-95. Game two of this three game series gets underway tomorrow night at 7:05, when Marlins starter Brian Flynn brings a 10.13 ERA in to face Roy Halladay, who is looking to even his record at 4-4 and lower his own ERA.
