The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Colorado Rockies Wednesday night, walking off in the 9th inning for the second time in four games. Starting pitchers Juan Nicasio and Cliff Lee both allowed just two runs, but the Rockies broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning against Justin De Fratus and the Phillies bullpen to take a 3-2 lead. However, the Phillies would get to Rafael Betancourt in the bottom of the ninth and score two runs to get the win.
Both teams traded solo home runs in the early frames. Chase Utley hit his 16th home run of the year in the bottom of the first to put the Phillies up 1-0, but Rockies catcher Wilin Rosario, who played first base tonight, would tie the game up on his 19th home run of the year in the top of the second.
Colorado would add another run in the top of the second on a Dexter Fowler single with runners on second and third base. A good throw from Domonic Brown in left field would prevent both runs from scoring on the play, as catcher Jordan Pacheco was thrown out at the plate, making it a 2-1 Rockies lead.
The Phillies scratched across a run in the home half of the fifth, as Michael Young grounded into a double play with the bases loaded. Young would not get the RBI on the play, but John Mayberry Jr. would score to tie the game. Mayberry had two doubles in tonight’s game.
No runs would be scored until the eighth inning, and both starters allowed just two runs. Cliff Lee, who hasn’t recorded a win since July 5th, lasted seven innings, allowed nine hits, two runs, no walks, and six strikeouts. Nicasio was pulled in the sixth inning, allowing just one earned run in 5 and 2/3 innings.
The Rockies nudged in front in the top of the eighth, as Justin De Fratus allowed a run to score. After hitting the leadoff batter with a pitch, De Fratus gave up a single to Michael Cuddyer. Nolan Arenado would single home the run to put Colorado in front.
Colorado reliever Rex Brothers shut down the Phillies offense in the bottom of the eighth, and gave way to Rafael Betancourt in the bottom of the ninth. Betancourt would allow a leadoff double to Kratz. Carlos Ruiz would step in and tie the game with a pinch hit RBI double. Michael Young, the next batter, would drive in the game-winning run for the second time in a week, bringing home Ruiz from second for a 4-3 Phillies win. Young battered a ball to the wall in left field to give the Phillies their second win of the series.
The Phillies have won three out of their last four games, and move to 56-70 on the season, and walk off for the second time in the past four games. The Rockies fall to 59-69 with tonight’s loss. Tomorrow night’s series finale features two righties: Chad Bettis for the Rockies, and Kyle Kendrick for the Phillies.
After last night’s rehab start, Jonathan Pettibone has reportedly had a setback in his recovery. Pettibone complained of shoulder soreness today, just one day after he pitched six innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Pettibone will have an MRI tomorrow. For now, Tyler Cloyd will keep his spot in the Phillies’ rotation.
Roy Halladay will make another rehab start Sunday at Double-A Reading. Halladay had a serviceable six innings with Single-A Lakewood on Tuesday night. It is speculated that he will return to the Phillies rotation by the end of the month.
Jimmy Rollins ended an 0 for 24 streak tonight, doubling in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rollins’ average dropped from .262 a month ago to .244.
