The Philadelphia Flyers will be playing their division rival New York Rangers tomorrow night at home in the Wells Fargo Center. Luckily for the Flyers, the Rangers will be without their star goaltender, Henrik Lundqvist, due to a "minor" injury. With Lundqvist out of the game, the Flyers must take advantage and start their turn around against the Rangers.
Lundqvist has apparently been dealing with the minor injury for the past week and a half. The team said it isn't serious, but that it has been bugging him lately. It didn't seem to be bugging him last week when he shutout the Washington Capitals, his first this season.
The Flyers will not be facing Cam Talbot tomorrow night. Talbot was just called up from the Rangers' AHL affiliate to replace Martin Biron, who was waived by the Rangers earlier in the week, as the backup goaltender. Biron, a former Flyer, announced his retirement earlier this week after 16 years in the NHL.
Talbot is a 26-year-old who is about to start his first game of his NHL career. He likely won't admit it, but he has to be nervous about it, especially since he will be playing against a division rival. Talbot is currently 4-0-1 with the Rangers' AHL affiliate. He has posted a 2.49 goals against average and a save percentage of .924.
The Flyers must take advantage of the fact that Lundqvist will not be in net. He always gives the Flyers problems. The Flyers were just 2-3 against the Rangers during the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season and 0-6 during the 2011-12 season. This season, the Flyers are off to a horrible 1-7 start, their worst in a long time.
The time to turn things around is now.
Flyers head coach Craig Berube knows that and is making line changes in order to get things moving in the right direction. Yesterday, Vinny Lecavalier and Michael Raffl were promoted to the top line with Claude Giroux. As a result from the changes, Jakub Voracek and Tye McGinn practiced with Brayden Schenn.
That top line of Raffl, Giroux and Lecavalier is a nice line. But, we said the same thing about Voracek, Giroux and Scott Hartnell. We also thought that the second line of Simmonds, Lecavalier and B. Schenn was a great line as well. However, nothing productive has come from either line… or any line.
If Berube doesn't change lines around in practice again before the game, expect those exact lines to take the ice against the Rangers Thursday night. The team now knows that their biggest problem, Lundqvvist, isn't in net and that should drive them to play better. Giroux is still looking to score his first goal of the season. That first goal is the key to getting Giroux's confidence back. Giroux, as well as the rest of the team, has to look for the mistakes that the Rangers goaltender makes and take advantage of them. With it being his first career start, mistakes are bound to be made.
If the Flyers come out and attack the net right away, that should give them the advantage right away as Talbot will likely be rattled. However, if they don't score more than one goal, which is all they have been averaging this season, they will likely lose. The only game they have won this season was a 2-1 victory over the Florida Panthers. In addition to scoring more goals, the Flyers don't stand a chance of winning if they don't show up for all 60 minutes.
By not having to face Lundqvist, maybe that will give the Flyers enough motivation to show up for all 60 minutes and take advantage of a goaltender in his first career start.
