The Philadelphia Flyers play their final preseason game tonight against the Washington Capitals and that means the final roster cuts are right around the corner. Today, the Flyers sent two more players to their AHL affiliate Adirondack Phantoms.
Forward Michael Raffl and defenseman Oliver Lauridsen were the victims of the ongoing final roster moves today. Sending Lauridsen down wasn't surprising because the Flyers are already have nine defensemen signed to one-way contracts. Those defensemen are Kimmo Timonen, Mark Streit, Luke Schenn, Braydon Coburn, Nicklas Grossmann, Andrej Meszaros, Erik Gustafsson, Marc-Andre Bourdon and Bruno Gervais. Bourdon is still dealing with post-concussion symptoms and is most likely going to start the season on the injured list. That still leaves eight defensemen going for seven spots on the roster. It seems as though Gervais will be the odd man out. There is also a possibility of the Flyers making a move so they can sign Hal Gill. At this point, the Flyers are watching the defensemen closely due to the effect injuries had on them last season.
Raffl put on a good performance in training camp, but he never showed that same performance in the preseason games. Raffl, a former Swedish Elite League player, was sent to the Phantoms to start his career in North America and he will likely be one of the Flyers' first choices as a call-up.
With the demotion of Raffl, Adam Hall, Scott Laughton and Chris Vandevelde will battle it out for the final two roster spot at forward. It is looking like Hall and Laughton will be making the team. Hall is good at face-offs and will be the fourth-line center if he makes the team. Laughton is also a center and he would get the fourth line job if hall doesn't make it. However, if both of them do, Laughton will have to be moved out to the wing.
