It was just a month ago when Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux had surgery to repair severed tendons in his right index finger. Now it appears that Giroux is ahead of schedule in his return to the ice.
Giroux severed two tendons in his right index finger while golfing in early August when his golf club shattered at the grip. He had surgery on August 15 to repair the damage the club caused.
Training camp started last week and it was thought that Giroux wouldn't be able to shoot pucks until at least the second week of training camp according to his rehab schedule. However, Giroux surprised his team when he started taking wrist shots on the second day of camp.
Giroux said that taking the shots during the teams September 13 practice wasn't planned. He just decided to try it out because he said his hand felt good. However, the day before, he was only passing the puck around.
Giroux shooting this early into training camp is a good sign that he is going to be ready for the season. The one thing that Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette doesn't want Giroux to do is rush his rehab process. Lavy and the training staff may not want Giroux to rush things, but Giroux knows what he can and can't handle. If he feels good, then he should push a little harder just to build the strength up and get a feel for puck handling again. When he starts feeling sore, he should take it easy and go from there.
If his rehab continues at this pace without any setbacks, expect Giroux to be ready for the season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs at home on October 2. Giroux is hoping he can get a least one preseason game under his belt before the season starts. The final two preseason games for the Flyers are September 26 against the New Jersey Devils and September 27 against the Washington Capitals.
