Philadelphia Eagles postion preview: Wide receiver

Last season, the Philadelphia Eagles had without a doubt one of the worst groups of wide receivers in the league.  The Eagles tied for sixth place in the league in number of drops and had one of the highest drop percentages in the league as well.  Upper level management took notice of the lack of skill at receiver and went out this offseason and signed two well established receivers in free agency, Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith, and then drafted two more receivers, Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson.  These four will join the only remaining wide receivers from last years team, Nelson Agholor, who has been a bust through his first two years, and Jordan Matthews, who continues to be consistent, yet frustrating at the same time.  With quarterback Carson Wentz entering year two, it is imperative that the Eagles surround him with consistent talent at wide receiver.  Lets try to determine what the wide receiver position will look like this year for the Eagles.

Alshon Jeffery

This past offseason, Jeffery signed a one year, 14 million dollar contract with the Eagles for the specific purpose of being the number one option for Carson Wentz.  Jeffery has yet to play a full season since 2014, and has missed time since then due to injuries and suspension.  However, when Jeffery is on the field, he is one of the best at his position in the league.  At 6’3â?³ and 220 pounds, Jeffrey has the body and athleticism to get position against smaller corner backs to go up for the ball and strong hands to come down with the catch.  He has missed time during training camp with a shoulder injury, but should be ready to go when the season begins.  Once we hit the regular season, Jeffery will be the number one receiver on the outside and most consistent option for Wentz, and will hopefully be able to become that receiving threat the Eagles lacked last year.
