The Philadelphia Eagles are making additions to the team as their offseason gets started. Right now, those additions are on the sideline. With the departure of two coaches, the Eagles and Chip Kelly have hired two new coaches while promoting another.
THE COACHES WHO LEFT
Bill Lazor was the quarterbacks coach for the Eagles for only one season. He left for an opportunity to move up on the offensive side of the ball as the Miami Dolphins hired him as their next Offensive Coordinator. Lazor is replacing the recently fired Mike Sherman, who had the job for two seasons. The Dolphins are hoping Lazor can work his magic on quarterback Ryan Tannehill like he did with Nick Foles this season.
Erik Chinander left his position so he could go back coaching at the University of Oregon. Chinander will be the new outside linebackers coach for the Ducks. It will be his second sting with the Ducks as he was an intern and graduate assistant under Chip Kelly before Kelly brought him to the Eagles.
THE NEW COACHES
- Bill Musgrave — Quarterbacks coach
- Mike Dawson — Assistant Defensive Line coach
- Michael Clay — Defensive Quality Control assistant
Bill Musgrave, the former offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, was brought on board as the new quarterbacks coach. This is his second stint with the Eagles as he was an offensive assistant for first six games of the 1998 season. He finished out the last 10 games of the season as the offensive coordinator. Musgrave has experience in the past as a quarterbacks coach. He coached the position with the Atlanta Falcons for five seasons and helped bring Matt Ryan to the level he is at now.
Mike Dawson was promoted from his position as the defensive quality control assistant to the assistant defensive line coach. Dawson coached at college level for 15 years and joined the Eagles coaching staff last season.
Michael Clay took over Dawson's former position. He has some big shoes to fill as Dawson helped coach the defense to the point of ranking third in the league for their impressive play of holding teams to 21 points or less. Clay also as tied to Chip Kelly as he was a linebacker the Oregon Ducks from 2009 to 2012. After cutting cut by the Miami Dolphins before the 2013 season started, he has decided to go into coaching instead of playing.
