The Philadelphia Eagles are in a bad situation right now with the health status of two of their quarterbacks who are both starter quality. The bad news that everyone expected officially came out Monday.
Quarterback Nick Foles was diagnosed with a concussion just a day after being taken down hard to the ground against the Dallas Cowboys. When Foles was taken down, video replay showed his head hitting the ground. He was slow to get up, but he walked off the field under his own power. A referee was seen signaling the Eagles sideline that Foles had hit his head.
Foles playing against the New York Giants on Sunday is highly unlikely now and he is out indefinitely. Michael Vick has been out for the past two weeks due to a hamstring injury and it is still unknown when he will return to action. However, if Vick is really close to being able to play on Sunday, expect the Eagles to have him suit up.
Because of the uncertainty surrounding the availability of Vick and Foles for Sunday's matchup against the Giants, the Eagles signed G.J. Kinne to the practice squad early Tuesday. Kinne signed with the Eagles in the offseason and was with them through the preseason. He was released on August 30 and never signed with another team. He has yet to throw his first pass during a regular season game. There is the possibility of the Eagles activating him for the game on Sunday if both Vick and Foles are ruled out which is the Eagles' worst case scenario.
The only other option that the Eagles had at quarterback would be to sign Dennis Dixon off of the Buffalo Bills' practice squad. Dixon knows the offense after spending the offseason and preseason with the Eagles before being cut. However, if the Eagles signed Dixon, they would have to keep him for three weeks on the 53-man roster. That is something the Eagles wanted to avoid because Vick and Foles would be back before then. Instead, they went the route of Kinne who wasn't signed with any team.
In the event that the Eagles decide to move forward with Barkley and either Vick or Foles, depending on health status, the Eagles' emergency quarterback would be James Casey. The tight end played quarterback in high school.
