The Philadelphia Eagles have faced a lot of questions regarding the brewing quarterback situation as to who will be the starting quarterback for the rest of the season when Michael Vick is officially cleared to play. However, they have a new situation on their hands revolving around the quarterbacks position.
Vick has been nursing a pulled hamstring since the second quarter of the New York Giants game and the injury caused him to miss last weeks game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and this weeks game against the Dallas Cowboys. Nick Foles came in to lead the Eagles to a victory over the Giants and was called on to start against the Buccaneers and Cowboys with Vick out.
Foles put on a good performance against the Buccaneers and the Eagles got the win. However, Foles is probably wishing their was a reset button for today. Through three quarters, Foles completed only 11 of his 29 pass attempts for 80 yards. To make his day even worse, he was brought down hard, hitting his head on the ground, late in the third quarter. He never returned to the game.
In came Matt Barkley for his NFL debut. Minus the three big mistakes Barkley had, he looked pretty good for a rookie quarterback that has had barely any time with the first team offense. Barkley threw for 129 yards, completing 11 of 20 passes. Those three big mistakes that Barkley made were interceptions. After completing his first pass of this career, Barkley threw his first career interception which ended up being overturned due to a Cowboys penalty. However, he threw two more after that and basically sealed the Eagles fate for the day.
THE QB SITUATION IS WORSE THAN BEFORE
Vick is still recovering from the pulled hamstring and it is unknown if he will play next week against the Giants. Now Foles may have a concussion. This leaves Chip Kelly and the Eagles with one healthy quarterback, rookie Matt Barkley.
The Eagles don't have a quarterback on the practice squad and their emergency quarterback when Barkley went into the game was tight end James Casey. The last time that Casey played quarterback was in high school where, as a junior, he was named an All-District Quarterback in 2001. Casey has the arm to back it up too because he also played baseball and had the best fastball in the Chicago White Sox 2003 draft class.
Chip Kelly said after the game that he doesn't have a clue who is going to be the starting quarterback next week when the Eagles take on the Giants in Philadelphia. He can't make any decisions on the matter until he knows who is cleared to play and who isn't. If Vick is cleared to play and Foles isn't cleared, then he will be the starter and vice versa. If both are cleared for action, then Vick will most likely get called on to start.
However, if both Vick and Foles are ruled out of next weeks game, then Chip Kelly has a really big mess on his hands. The worst case scenario is that the Eagles would just have to bite the bullet next week by starting Barkley and signing a quarterback to back him up if… and that's a big IF… both Vick and Foles are ruled out. Barkley would be the better option to start instead of someone they sign temporarily because Barkley already knows the playbook.
When Barkley came in against the Cowboys, he made some pretty good passes and you could tell he was trying to push the limits, maybe a little too quick for a rookie. Rookies make mistakes though and we saw that with his three interceptions. It was Barkley's NFL debut and the nerves were probably getting to him, especially in a big division game. If Barkley has an entire week to prepare with the first team offense, which he may get this week depending on the status of Vick and Foles, you will likely see a more comfortable quarterback next time.
The next few days will give us an idea as to who is starting next week, but as of right now, it's all a waiting game. A painful waiting game.
