The Philadelphia Eagles have been preparing all week for their Sunday afternoon game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but that game is in jeopardy of being postponed after a third Tampa player contracted methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, also known as MRSA.
MRSA is a staph infection that is difficult to fight because it is resistant to most common antibiotics.
Buccaneers kicker Lawrence Tynes and offensive guard Carl Nicks were the first two players on the team to contract the infection and they each got it over the summer. Tynes hasn't played at all this season and has been on the non-football injury list. Nicks was able to come back and play after he missed the Buccaneers first two games. However, Nicks had a recurrence earlier this week, but he hasn't been ruled out of playing on Sunday.
The third player to contract the infection is rookie cornerback Johnthan Banks, as reported by NFL.com. Banks also hasn't been ruled out of the game on Sunday, but it is highly likely that he misses the game on Sunday.
Because this is the third player on the team to be infected by MRSA and two of them becoming infected this past week, the Eagles-Bucs game on Sunday is in jeopardy of being postponed. The NFL has stated that it doesn't plan on postponing the game, but the NFL Players Association may advise the Eagles and Buccaneers not to play on Sunday. The NFL Players Association is waiting for the containment report results before making the decision to tell the teams to postpone the game.
The Eagles still plan on traveling to Tampa this weekend, but remain in contact with the NFL to stay updated on the situation.
