The move doesn't come as a surprise as he was released once already this season and then ended up on injured reserve in the second week. The first time Hughes was released was before the Washington Redskins game and the move was made so the Eagles wouldn't have to guarantee Hughes' $540,000 salary for the 2013 season.
Hughes ended up injuring his hamstring during the San Diego Chargers game which lead to his trip to injured reserve. Because of his earlier release, the team saved the remaining $444,705 of his salary and released him, this time for good, with an injury settlement.
Hughes went from playing on special teams with the Eagles the past few seasons to playing as the number two cornerback to being released twice in three weeks. All of this happened after 31 games in four seasons with the Birds. Injuries aside, Hughes' two releases just proves that no ones job is safe in the Eagles secondary.
Hopefully, with the addition of Carmichael to take Hughes' place, the secondary can get things together and play like they did against the Redskins for the rest of the season. The most important thing they need to do is stay healthy.
