Hughes was resigned by the Eagles prior to the San Diego Chargers game and played during the Chargers game. However, he suffered a hamstring injury and hasn't practiced at all this week. With only a short amount of preparation time for their Thursday night game against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Eagles had to do something about the problematic secondary. Their answer, at least for the short-term, is Carmichael.
Carmichael was signed off of the practice squad of the Houston Texans. He was drafted by the Texans in 2011, but he spend his rookie season on the injured reserve. He came back last season to play in six games. Carmichael was a victim of roster cuts by the Texans, however, they signed him to their practice squad shortly after being cut. The fact that the signing comes the day before the Eagles play the Chiefs, Carmichael probably won't see any playing time considering he hasn't learned any of the defensive playbook. He probably won't see much playing time this season either unless there is a desperate need for it.
It is expected that the Eagles release Hughes again, this time being permanent.
