The 2013 season started just a few days ago and the time has finally come for the Philadelphia Eagles to run out onto the field for their first game of the season against the Washington Redskins. Here is a preview of what's to come tonight:
This is going to be the battle of the quarterbacks tonight. Both Michael Vick and Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III are mobile quarterbacks and this is the first time they are going to face off against each other. Vick and RG3 have four of the biggest quarterback rushing seasons as reported by Ruben Frank of CSNPhilly.com. Vick rushed for 1,039 yards, 902 yards and 777 yards in 2006, 2004 and 2002 respectively. RG3 ran for 815 yards last year.
EAGLES — Vick won the starting job over Nick Foles after only two preseason games. While Foles showed he can run the offense, Vick just outperformed him. One thing that helped Vick win the job is that he is a mobile quarterback and Chip Kelly brought in an offense that best suits Vick. Kelly was never going to show all of his cards in the preseason so tonight will be the first time we get to see the full offensive package.
REDSKINS — This is RG3's first game back after a season ending knee injury which required surgery. Everyone is going to be on "RG3 watch" tonight to see how his surgically repaired knee is going to hold up. He didn't see much playing time in the preseason due to the fact the Redskins were easing him back in. If his performance against the Eagles last season is any clue of what he might do this season against the Eagles, then the Eagles defense is going to have their hands full. RG3 completed 77 percent of his passes against the Eagles last season. He had six touchdowns, one interception and 398 passing yards.
EAGLES — This is going to be interesting. The Eagles secondary had it's problems last season and judging from their performance in the preseason, it looks like they are going to have their problems again this season. RG3 threw for 3,200 yards last season. With the Eagles secondary problems, RG3 may be looking to beat his numbers against the Eagles from last year.
The defensive line also looked like was having some issues as well. The reason for this is because they had to adjust from playing in a 4-3 defense in the past to playing in a 3-4 defense this season. The 3-4 defense makes it somewhat harder to stuff the holes on the run if the linebackers don't get up to the front fast enough. Washington has a strong halfback in Alfred Morris and he can get yards, lots of them, after contact.
The Pass-Run ratio looks like it could be around 50/50 tonight for the Redskins if they want to hit the Eagles where it hurts on defense.
REDSKINS — The Redskins are also hurting in the secondary. The Eagles should take advantage of this with the deep threat in DeSean Jackson. Game films couldn't help the Redskins going into the game because of the fact that Kelly never showed his full offensive package during the preseason. This could catch the Redskins defense off guard with the way the Eagles line up. With the Eagles read-option offense, it could also create havoc for the Redskins defense because they don't know if Vick will just take off and run. However, the Redskins have linebacker Brian Orakpo back to full health after missing 14 games last season. Orakpo and linebacker Ryan Kerrigan are two players the Eagles offensive line has to look out for because both can get to the quarterback and get there quick. If the Redskins can tear apart the Eagles offensive line, things will go south for Vick qucikly.
