Hughes was going to miss the teams season opener Monday night against the Washington Redskins anyway because of a hand injury. However, the release comes as a surprise because of the issues in the Eagles secondary. Some starters in the Eagles secondary had to play more than they should have in the fourth preseason game because if injuries to other players with one of those players being Hughes, who injured his hand in the third preseason game.
Rather than wait until Hughes is a healthy backup, the team released him and made no other roster moves. This means that Hughes could return after the game, if the Eagles decide to bring him back, or that the Eagles could make an addition before the game. Making an addition seems unlikely because if it is a player that hasn't been practicing with the team, it will be hard to learn the defensive playbook by gametime.
Hughes mostly played on special teams and he was fifth in production points last season with 115.
Cary Williams, Brandon Boykin, Bradley Fletcher, Shaun Prater and rookie Jordan Poyer are the only healthy cornerbacks on the Eagles roster as of right now.
