With the first-team offense basically set, the decision was not a hard one for Kelly. It is a smart decision to sit them because there is no reason to risk a starter getting injured in a pointless fourth preseason game. Foles and the second team offense will take the field for the Eagles' first offensive drive. From then on, Foles and rookie Matt Barkley will split most of the snaps. Kelly said he will try to play Dennis Dixon and G.J. Kinne. However, since Michael Vick, Foles and Barkley the three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, Kelly will focus more and Foles and Barkley against the Jets.
The decision to sit, and not sit, the starting defense was also an easy one for Kelly. Some members of the Eagles' starting secondary will be playing. Cornerbacks Cary Williams, Brandon Boykin and/or Bradley Fletcher will have to play Thursday night because injuries to others at the position. Brandon Hughes and Curtis Marsh both have broken hands which will cause them to miss at least six to eight weeks. The Eagles also released Eddie Whitely after he suffered a knee injury. Rookie Jordan Poyer and Trevard Lindley are the only other healthy cornerbacks other than Williams, Boykin and Fletcher.
Kelly said he will be keeping a close eye on what cornerbacks become available as the rest of the league makes their final cuts.
