It only took two preseason games for Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly to decide who the starting quarterback for the season will be. Kelly announced earlier today that Michael Vick will be at the helm when the Eagles offense takes the field against the Washington Redskins on September 9.
Between spring camps and training camp, Vick and Nick Foles have competed against each other in close to 40 practices. Vick and Foles have also been rotating reps with the first-team offense each week. With Vick being named the starting quarterback for the season, it can be expected that Kelly will have Vick taking the most reps with the first-team for the rest of training camp. Kelly said that Vick would play at least all of the first half of their preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars Saturday night.
Vick had earned the job after outperforming Foles in both preseason games. While both quarterbacks played well, Vick had an 80 percent completion rating after only four drives down the field. Vick also had the chemistry with the wide receivers help him excel in the preseason since he had played with them for the past three seasons.
It is interesting that Kelly announced his starting quarterback decision only after two preseason games when he said he would name the starter during the week leading up to the game against the Redskins. For now, Kelly has two quarterbacks that he knows are capable of running his offense. Given that Vick hasn't played a full season with the Eagles due to injuries for the past two years, Foles can only wait patiently for his time to come.
If Vick does stay healthy for the entire season, this could be a breakout year for him as Kelly's offense best suits Vick's athleticism. The offense is geared toward a mobile quarterback and Vick is known to take off on the run when he has no other option. He can also move around out of the pocket to allow his receivers more time to get open. However, Vick's health depends entirely on the offensive line. If the offensive line plays like they have over the past two years, it doesn't matter who the quarterback is because they will not make it through the season unscathed.
