The defensive line has been a major weakness for the Philadelphia Eagles throughout the 2012 season. One of the players who has been severely underperforming is defense end Jason Babin, and on Tuesday the team announced that Babin has been cut. Despite Babin's struggles this season and the fact that it was unlikely Babin would return to the Eagles in 2013, this particular move comes as a surprise.
Last season Babin had 18 sacks after signing a five-year contract worth more than $27 million. However, Babin only has 5.5 sacks this season and he has seen a decrease in playing time as the season has gone on. The Twitter feuds that Babin has had with Philadelphia fans while bad mouthing the fans who disprove of the team's performance this season did not help Babin's case for increasing his likability either. Following the release, head coach Andy Reid said the following about Babin:
"We appreciate everything that Jason has given this team over the last couple of years," said Reid. We wish him all the best as he continues his career. By releasing him today, this gives us an opportunity to give more playing time to some of the younger guys in the defensive line rotation."
Rookie Vinny Curry could be one of the players Reid is talking about giving more playing time now that Babin is out of the picture. The Eagles next game comes on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys.
