In what is a surprising and shocking piece of news this Thursday morning, Joe Banner is no longer the President of the Philadelphia Eagles. The move is a part of the front office succession plan the franchise has in place for the team's future. Banner will now be the Strategic Advisor to the Owner while Don Smolenski, the Chief Operating Officer, is promoted to President. The series of moves will be discussed and officially announced in a press conference this afternoon at 2:30 PM.
"There is no better executive in sports than Joe Banner," said owner Jeffrey Lurie. "We are making this announcement today because he is looking for a greater challenge, and in Don Smolenski I have a highly regarded, very worthy successor as President of this team."
Lurie and Banner have been close friends for over 40 years, and over a year ago the two discussed the future of the organization. In addition, Banner stated his want to have a greater challenge in sports. Both have trust in their franchise's key young executives, Smolenski and General Manager Howie Roseman to continue the team's success in the next generation.
