The Orlando Magic hold an ace in the 2013 NBA Draft by having the No. 2 pick, but is that pick now up for grabs? The Magic are "seriously considering moving down" the upcoming draft, according to the Orlando Sentinel’s columnist Brian Schmitz. A move down the draft could severely hurt this team’s chances of rebuilding the team.
reported Schmitz. “I’m told that quite a few teams have called the Magic about the availability of their lottery pick and what it might take to acquire it, and the Magic are listening.”
After finishing this past season with a disastrous 22-62 record, a move like this by the Magic will probably make them miss huge opportunities, such as top guard picks as Ben McLemore and Trey Burke. McLemore has been a strong contender that has expressed interest in Orlando. While Burke has said that he will be happy wherever he goes, he is a strong player and a key factor that the Magic should take advantage of.
Though it is not clear whether or not the Magic will actually go through with this offer, teams such as the Washington Wizards, Charlotte Bobcats, and Phoenix Suns may look to take advantage of it. Each of those teams are targeting Nerlens Noel, the projected top draft pick, and while the Magic are considering it, they will see who wants him enough to pay top dollar for their no. 2 pick.
With Orlando’s uncertainty and other teams hunger, the question will remain throughout the month: are the Orlando Magic going to sell their draft pick, or will they go through and push to build a stronger team for the 2013-14 season?
