Ohio State athletic teams are cheered on by one of the most recognizable athletes in college sports: Brutus Buckeye. Brutus, who is a large version of the state nut of Ohio, is dressed in the scarlet and grey colors of the university. The original costume for the mascot was created in 1965 by students using papier-mâché chocolate.
While the original costume may not have lasted long before melting in the sun, Brutus has been a fixture at Ohio State events ever since. While the clothing worn by Brutus varies depending on the sport and the event, he is always seen with his iconic “Block-O” cap. The hat is homage to legendary football coach Woody Hayes, who was also a fan of that style head ware.
