The Oakland Raiders have been without the services of their 2013 first-round NFL Draft choice DJ Hayden because of a stress fracture in his foot. That will continue as the team will reportedly place him on the physically unable to perform list.
ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting per a source that the Raiders are placing Hayden on the PUP list. That means he is out for at least the first six weeks of the 2014 season.
Oakland has to cut down their roster from 83 players to 75 players today. By placing Hayden of the PUP list, the team can save a roster spot for another player as he works his way back from the stress fracture. It is a huge blow to the Raiders secondary because they were counting on Hayden so heavily this season. However, he has been unable to participate in training camp or preseason due to the injury.
With Hayden out, the Raiders will have to look for another candidate to step up in his now prolonged absence. The team has been using Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown as their starting cornerbacks. The other players who are possible replacements are rookies T.J. Carrie and Keith McGill as well as Chimdi Chekwa and Neiko Thorpe.
With all the new pieces in the Oakland secondary, they have struggled this preseason. In the first two preseason games against the Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions, the first team was beat consistently through the air. They played better in the third preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, but still have issues to work out. The only silver lining is the Raiders know Hayden will be out and the other corners know they are going to have to step up.
