“When you are going out trying to prove a point to yourself and the coaching staff, everyday you have to go out with the mindset to compete, if not, nothing is going to happen positive for you,“ Butler said. “You just have to make it happen.”
Butler has made things happen this preseason
, leading the team with 11 catches for 178 yards and three touchdowns in three games. He and McGloin connected on the game winning touchdown against the Detroit Lions and connected twice more for scores in the fourth quarter against the Green Packers. Butler and McGloin both said that their familiarity comes from playing with each other on the scout team last season and building a bond as both are trying to grow as back-ups.
Because Butler has been able to impress in the preseason
, he could have locked up a roster
spot. The Raiders should carry five or six wide receivers on the final roster
. The group as a whole has not been effective this preseason
. The passing offense has struggled and the wide receivers have failed to make serious impacts. That has further solidified the case for Butler. The players he is competing for the last roster
spots at the position have under whelmed as he has shined. He has done his work against the opponent's back-ups, but the impact is still significant.
