The Oakland Raiders have been busy today making roster moves in preparation for their preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings Friday. Earlier, the Raiders signed linebacker Spencer Hadley and waived injured linebacker Marshall McFadden. Now, Oakland has signed safety Larry Asante and waived injured safety Shelton Johnson.

Asante joins the Raiders after being selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He bounced around to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and most recently the Indianapolis Colts. The 6-0, 210 pound Asante played in five games for the Colts in 2013, primarily on special teams. The 26-year-old has appeared in 17 games over his three year NFL career, producing 14 tackles, one interception, one pass defense, and one forced fumble. The former Nebraska Cornhusker is known as more of a strong safety capable of being effective in run support. He will need to show improved coverage skills to impress the Raiders coaching staff.

Johnson was released by Oakland to make room for Asante. He came to the Raiders as an undrafted free agent last season and appeared in four games. He was able to contribute four special team's tackles. He missed significant time in training camp with a hamstring issue.

The Raiders are clearing out some of these injured players who can't help them in camp. Both McFadden and Johnson have been on the shelf with hip and hamstring issues respectively, which has opened the door for Hadley and Asante. Both players have their best shot at making an impression on special teams.
