The chips are falling into place as the Oakland Raiders announced the signing of second round pick Derek Carr. Now, the Raiders have inked five of their eight 2014 NFL Draft selections including first round choice Khalil Mack and all three seventh round picks in Jonathan Dowling, Travis Carrie, and Shelby Harris. With Carr now taken care of, he will have the opportunity to work a full offseason with the players and the staff to be as acclimated as possible for the season. The deal will be for four years which is the standard rookie deal.
Oakland has wasted no time in getting their picks signed. Only three, guard Gabe Jackson, defensive tackle Justin Ellis, and cornerback Keith McGill remain and they will be a priority as soon as possible. The Raiders will not have trouble getting those deals done.
Carr is a very valuable member of the Raiders draft class because he is considered the starting quarterback of the future. His development this season is of the upmost importance. Therefore credit the Raiders for getting this done and giving him the chance to come in and work very early on in the process.
Quarterback Matt Schaub is going to be the starter when the season starts barring something unexpected. Carr will back him up and begin to learn. Carr possesses some very interesting traits that should suit him well at the NFL level. His arm strength and release are well above average. He will need to get better with his accuracy against pressure, but that is why it is so important he signed quickly and begins workouts early. He led the nation in passing yards with 5, 082 and in passing touchdowns with 50 in 2013. He is also a fifth year senior and that experience should be a great benefit as he starts the developmental process.
