The Oakland Raiders are sitting on the fifth pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. They are going to have some options as more talented players declare for the draft. There is another name for the Raiders to consider as quarterback Blake Bortles put his name into the draft.
The Orlando Sentinel reports Bortles will forgo his senior season and enter the 2014 NFL Draft. Bortles came on this season as a top tier prospect leading Central Florida to their best season in program history. His coming out party culminated with a monster performance in the Fiesta Bowl win over Baylor and being named MVP of the game. The 6'4", 230 pound quarterback completed 20-31 passes for 301 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for 93 yards on just eight carries and another score.
Oakland must address the quarterback position this offseason after experimenting with both Terrelle Pryor and Matt McGloin under center this season. Both showed some ability and development, but neither is a franchise quarterback.
Bortles will get a look from the Raiders because of that quarterback situation. He has produced consecutive solid years at UCF. In his two seasons as a starting quarterback, Bortles has completed at least 63 percent of his passes for at least 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns. He did not throw more than 10 interceptions in each of those seasons and displayed his duel threat abilities with 14 rushing touchdowns. Bortles is well put together with NFL arm strength.
The Raiders will have to see where Bortles tests at the combine and evaluate his film. They will also have to keep an eye on the teams in front of them in the NFL Draft because several will be looking to add quarterbacks. Since bowl games have ended, many college stars have announced their intentions to enter the 2014 NFL Draft. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, wide receiver Sammy Watkins, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and now Bortles will give the Raiders options and a talented pool of players to select from when the time comes.
