Last week, the Oakland Raiders pass offense had success against the Kansas City Chiefs. The problem was quarterback Matt McGloin did not take care of the football and tossed four interceptions. He will have a chance at redemption this week against a San Diego Chargers pass defense that is near the bottom of the NFL.
It will be interesting and telling to see how McGloin rebounds from his worst game as a professional. He is only a rookie so his experience is limited, which could help him bounce back or stick with him and hurt him this week. McGloin has the opportunity to play well Sunday. In the first meeting between the Raiders and the Chargers, Terrelle Pryor has one of his best games completing 18-23 passes for 221 yards, two scores, and zero turnovers. He will be involved at quarterback as the Raiders continue to use both in the game plan.
The Raiders need better quarterback play to maximize a talented wide receiving corps. Rod Streater looks like the real deal and is progressing rapidly in his second season. He is able to use his height and body to shield defenders and make difficult catches. Andre Holmes has emerged as a viable wideout. Against the Chiefs last week, he made an outstanding one-handed grab. Before injuries derailed him, Denarius Moore was showing tremendous promise and more consistency. Rookie tight end Mychal Rivera has touchdowns in two straight games. With all these weapons, McGloin and Pryor will have to find a way to have success in the passing game.
San Diego ranks 29th in the NFL in passing defense, allowing 267.4 yards per game. The Raiders come into the match-up averaging only 210.2 yards per game passing. One side or the other will rise to the challenge and make more plays. Despite what head coach Dennis Allen is saying about it not being evaluation time for the remaining two games, it is. The Raiders need to see who can play and be impactful as the move into 2014. The Chargers will provide a favorable opponent for the passing attack and the Raiders have to take advantage.
