The Oakland Raiders have had several injury concerns this week despite the extra time from playing last Thursday. Seven Raiders in total have been ruled out for the game against the New York Jets Sunday.
Running back Rashad Jennings suffered a concussion on Thanksgiving against the Dallas Cowboys. He has passed some of the NFL concussion protocol tests, but has not been fully cleared to play. He has practiced this week on a limited basis and will be a game time decision. The Raiders were cautious with quarterback Terrelle Pryor earlier in the year as he was cleared by the NFL to play, but the Raiders held him out. It is a case by case basis, so Jennings will be evaluated before Sunday.
If Jennings is unable to go, Oakland will turn to fullback Marcel Reece to carry the rushing load. He filled in well last season with three games of 100 yards combined rushing and receiving. Running backs Darren McFadden and Jeremy Steward have been ruled out so the options are limited. Taiwan Jones, the former running back turned cornerback, has taken reps this week. The Raiders don't want to take away for his terrific special teams play, but could use him as a contingency plan.
Strong safety Tyvon Branch returned to practice this week after missing 10 weeks with a leg injury. Because of that, it was thought he had a chance to play versus the Jets, but is out Sunday. Fellow safety Usama Young is also out for the game with a neck injury. That means Oakland will line up Brandian Ross and Charles Woodson with little depth. Guard Mike Brisiel, wide receiver Denarius Moore and linebacker Kaluka Maiava round out the Raiders players missing the game. Tackle Menelik Watson is probable along with defensive end Jason Hunter. Linebacker Miles Burris is questionable with a toe injury.
