Two AFC West rivals will square off this Sunday as the Oakland Raiders travel to take on the Kansas City Chiefs. The Raiders are coming off a 27-17 win against another AFC West opponent, the San Diego Chargers. The Chiefs are a perfect 5-0 heading into this match-up. The Raiders have won their last six meetings with the Chiefs in Kansas City.
The Chiefs have a solid recipe to win. Quarterback Alex Smith takes care of the football and the defense is rock solid. They will rely heavily on running back Jamaal Charles in both the running and passing games. The Raiders did a terrific job last season against Charles, holding him to 14 yards on 14 carries in two games. They will have to match that effort in order to force the Chiefs to beat them with Smith. Smith does not test defenses down the field, taking the check downs and quick throws. Oakland will need to be physical on the outside with the receivers to allow defensive end Lamaar Houston and the other defensive line members to get pressure. Defensive coordinator Jason Tarver will also bring different blitzers like safety Charles Woodson, who is coming off a spectacular game last week where he intercepted a pass and took a fumbles back for a touchdown.
When the Raiders are on offense, they want to run the ball and take their chances on the outside with Denarius Moore and Rod Streater. Quarterback Terrelle Pryor has made huge strides in only four games this season. He has not turned the ball over in his last two games, while throwing three touchdowns in that span. The Kansas City defense will not make it easy. They are fourth best in the NFL at stopping the pass, allowing a remarkable 197.8 yards per game. The Chiefs also do a very good job of getting to the quarterback. Through five games, they have amassed 21 sacks, led by linebacker Justin Houston and his 8.5.
Kansas City is less stout against the running, giving up 115 yards per game. The Raiders running back situation is murky, with both Darren McFadden and Rashad Jennings listed as questionable. Both were able to participate in practice this week, but only in limited fashion. Whether they can play or not, Pryor will be relied on to move the running game with his athleticism.
