Through the first two games of the regular season, the Oakland Raiders defense has done a terrific job of getting to the quarterback. Last season, the Raiders only sacked opposing quarterbacks 25 times. This season, Oakland already has accumulated nine sacks, which leads the NFL.
Despite the great job of getting to the quarterback and bringing him down, the Raiders have yet to take the next step and force turnovers. Through the two games, Oakland has yet to create a takeaway.
“If we continue to get to the quarterback in the pocket, eventually some of those are going to be created into sack fumbles and then being able to get some of the strips down the field, that’s always something that we talk about,” Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said. “As a defense, the only reason that you go out there is to get the ball back for the offense, and that’s what we have to do a little bit better job of doing.”
When the Raiders take on the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football this week, they will look to reverse this trend and force a turnover. The Broncos stable of running back especially Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman are prone to fumbling. Hillman had his role reduced significantly because of his fumbling issues and Ball coughed the ball up last week against the New York Giants. On the other hand, quarterback Peyton Manning has thrown 85 times in two games for nine touchdowns and zero interceptions.
It will be a monstrous test for the Raiders against the Broncos on the road Monday. If they have a chance to steal the win, it will because they were able to get to Manning and create turnovers.
