The Oakland Raiders have announced seven additions to their practice squad today. Five of the players were in training camp with the team, while two others were added from other teams. The Raiders have one spot left to fill. They also signed tackle Tony Pashos and released Alex Barron
The players who participated in the Oakland training camp and now find themselves on the practice squad are cornerback Chance Clancy and safety Shelton Johnson on defense. On offense, the Raiders kept wide receiver Greg Jenkins, tight end Brian Leonhardt, and guard Lamar Mady. Clancy, Jenkins, and Leonhardt all showed very well in the preseason to earn their spots.
The two players the Raiders found from other teams included former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Marshall McFadden and former New York Giants tackle Matt McCants. McFadden was compared to for Pro Bowl linebacker James Harrison in the Pittsburgh media. That could be premature, but he will have an opportunity to show his worth for the Raiders, who only have six healthy linebackers on the roster. The South Carolina State product made one appearance for the Steelers in 2012. McCants was drafted by the Giants in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft. He played last season as part of their practice squad.
The team also released tackle Alex Barron and signed tackle Tony Pashos. Barron improved in the preseason, but never showed the ability to be a serviceable replacement for left tackle Jared Veldheer. Rookie second round pick Menelik Watson showed well at left tackle in the preseason finale leaving Barron without a position. Pashos was released by the Washington Redskins during final cuts. He is a former fifth round selection in the 2003 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. He was out all of the 2012 season, but started 12 games for the Cleveland Browns in 2011. He brings 70 career starts to Oakland mainly at right tackle.
