For the first time since week 17 against the San Diego Chargers, the Oakland Raiders put on the pads today at training camp. With the contact practice, the Raiders' defensive line was able to show their depth and ability to rush the quarterback.

Rookie defensive end Jack Crawford, who the Raiders drafted in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, showed his ability to disrupt plays in the backfield. On two different occasions, the 6-5, 275 pound Crawford was able to beat his man and get into the backfield for what would have been a sack. Richard Seymour and Matt Shaughnessy were also able to show pass rush ability. One area to clean up on the defensive front is jumping offsides.

“I’ve been pleased with Jack. Jack is obviously a young player, so he’s still learning the game, but he’s a big guy that’s got athleticism and he wants to be good,” Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said. “I think if you’ve got athleticism and you’ve got some football instincts and you’re willing to work to get there, then at some point he’ll be a player for us.”

Wide receiver Denarius Moore did not practice today. He tweaked his hamstring during the team's last mandatory mini-camp in June. He joins linebacker Aaron Curry (knee), punter Shane Lechler (knee), cornerback Ron Bartell (hamstring) and nose tackle Travis Ivey (conditioning). Tight end Richard Gordon also missed today's session after not finishing practice yesterday with a hip injury.

“It’s kind of the same thing we’ve been dealing with but I don’t really expect it to be anything,” Allen said. “It is kind of more precautionary than anything else.”

Running back Mike Goodson did not finish yesterday's practice with a hamstring issue, but returned today and showed explosiveness on some long runs. Yesterday Taiwan Jones, who has been working with the second team, had a good showing at practice. Starter Darren McFadden continues to have a nice camp, putting his speed and strength on display in particular when he caught a pass and ran over rookie Miles Burris.

“I thought early in the period offensively we had a couple of nice runs on some misdirection plays; and so some of those were just, as you saw, explosive plays in the running game,” Allen said.

Oakland has an off day tomorrow and returns Friday for an afternoon practice.
