The St. Louis Blues have put Dmitrii Sergeev on waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract. The Blues were clearly not happy with the way the Russian defenceman showed up to the start of their training camp.

The move seemed to be inevitable since the 22-year-old defenseman played only two games in the last season, both for the AHL’s “San Antonio Rampage”. He didn’t show anything worth mentioning during that period.
At the beginning of this season, the Russian defenseman didn’t show the will to earn a spot in a roster. As observers mention, he came into the 2018 training camp completely out of shape. St. Louis Blues head coach Mike Yeo also mentioned that his physical condition was not up to the club’s standards.
A Gamble for The Kitchener Rangers
By selecting Dmitrii Sergeev at #23 of the CHL Import Draft in 2013, The Kitchener Rangers took a certain risk.
A strong shut down defender left a good impression at the U17 tournament 2012. On a team filled with offensively dynamic forwards, Sergeev stood out as a hard-nosed, aggressive defender.
He had good skating skill, a great point shot and was an efficient puck handler. While being agile and fluid, he could play a physical game. However, on the smaller sized rinks, the player had troubles with his play. There was a lack of creativity and imagination.
Dmitrii Sergeev played 138 games for the Kitchener Rangers. He put up nine goals and 44 assists.

A Lost Opportunity
The St. Louis Blues acquired Sergeev’s rights in the fall of 2014.
In his only season with the team’s farm club, Sergeev had an opportunity to make his mark in the St. Louis Blues system. He left a good impression. Alas, everything was spoiled by an injury.
And now all points to the fact that he seems abandoned his hopes to make a statement in the North American hockey environment.
Will he be able to do that somewhere else?
