The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that Calgary Flames winger Ryan Lomberg has been suspended for two games for starting a fight within the last five minutes of a game, and for making a line change for the purposes of fighting. He gets one game for each offence. This is his first career suspension.
Calgary’s Ryan Lomberg has been suspended for one game for leaving the players’ bench on a legal line change to start an altercation. This is in addition to the automatic suspension announced earlier today. https://t.co/PU62h6QRpO

Lomberg has been suspended for two games for an incident with Mathew Dumba. Lomberg started a fight during the final five minutes during Thursday’s win over the Minnesota Wild. This breaks both rule 70.2 regarding a player starting a fight immediately after making a line-change or coming out of the penalty box as well as the rule against instigating a fight in the final five minutes of the game. John Scott and Ryane Clowe also had incidents like this in the past and they both got two game suspensions.
So far this season, Lomberg has played just three games and has yet to record a point. He has picked up 17 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers were 29 percent Corsi-For and a relative Corsi of -29.4.
Lomberg has spent his entire two-year NHL career with the Calgary Flames. He has put up one assist in ten career games. He’s in the final year of a two-year entry-level deal that he signed in 2017.
What This Means for the Future
Lomberg has only played in 10 career games and three this season. As an undrafted free-agent Lomberg has yet to make a positive impact on the Flames and this was basically a play to defend his teammate. Lomberg currently has two goals and four assists in six games with the Stockton Heat, he has picked up at least 10 goals in the previous two seasons. Physicality is a big part of Lomberg’s game as he has picked up over 100 minutes in penalties over his past two seasons in the AHL.
