Bogosian was injured in practice on Jan. 9. It occurred while battling for the puck along the boards with Evander Kane. He fell awkwardly and wasn’t able to put weight on the leg while being helped off the ice. The original diagnosis was 4-6 weeks. Bogosian has only played in 18 games this season due to injuries.
So far this season, he has only one assist for one point. He also added 20 minutes in penalties. His possession numbers are 49.1 percent Corsi and a relative Corsi of 3.0.
Over his 10-year NHL career, Bogosian has played for the Atlanta Thrashers, Winnipeg Jets, and the Buffalo Sabres. He has put up 40 goals and 87 assists for 127 career points in 393 career games. He was originally drafted in the first round, third overall of the 2008 NHL draft by the Atlanta Thrashers. The Sabres acquired Bogosian in 2015 as a part of a deal that included Kane.
“The news regarding Zach’s injury is unfortunate,” general manager Jason Botterill said in a statement released by the team. “Zach has been dealing with this injury since the beginning of the season. After consulting with our medical team, we felt that it was important to get this taken care of now so that he can be back to full strength and ready to contribute at the beginning of next season.”
What This Means for the Future
It’s an end to another frustrating season for the 27-year-old blueliner. He has missed at least 10 games for the last eight consecutive seasons.
The Sabres season is pretty much lost at this point. As such, the team will get a chance to look at other defenders. Bogosian has two years left on his deal and will need to make serious progress if he is to sign another deal similar to his current contract.
