The 30-year-old Saffold is coming off arguably the best season of his career. He played an indispensable role on the Los Angeles Rams‘ offensive line which was one of the best units in all of the NFL. In the end, Pro Football Focus gave Saffold the ninth-best player grade among the league’s guards.
It culminated in the nine-year veteran taking part in his first career Super Bowl. Though the Rams ultimately fell to the New England Patriots by a score of 13-3 in Super Bowl LIII, they did the franchise proud by getting as far as they did. It was the Rams’ first Super Bowl appearance in 17 years and just their fourth overall.
The native of Bedford, OH has spent his entire career with the Rams up to this point. After the completion of his rookie deal, Saffold actually signed a five-year $42.5 million with the Oakland Raiders in March of 2014. But he failed a physical after signing which compelled the Raiders to void the deal. Saffold subsequently rejoined the Rams on a five-year, $31.7 million deal.
The Rams initially selected Saffold in the 2nd round (33rd overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. Prior to that, he was a fixture on Indiana’s offensive line, starting 41 games for the Hoosiers during his collegiate career. Saffold garnered second-team all-Big Ten recognition as a junior and senior. He proceeded to make the PFWA All-Rookie team after becoming the only first-year player to start all his team’s games and allowing just three sacks on 590 pass attempts.
