Joba Chamberlain was looking forward to a meeting with his former teammate, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, and when it happened in the 10th inning of a 3-3 ballgame Joba promptly plunked The Captain.

Clearly Chamberlain was trying to apologize as much as he could and meant no harm with the pitch.
It doesn't get any worse than that for Chamberlain. Not only did the Tigers reliever put a runner on base, he hit Jeter in his first trip back to the Bronx. That certainly didn't endear him to an already hostile crowd that booed Chamberlain any chance it got.
plunking Jeter in the arm is, i'm guessing, how absolutely no one wanted that to go. Joba immediately doubles over in frustration.

Thankfully Jeter was fine after the hit by pitch or else there may have been a riot at Yankee Stadium.
Joba gets booed loudly as he hits Jeter with a pitch. It was a 1-2 count w/ 2 outs, and clearly unintentional. But folks like to boo, so…

Of course there was no shortage of jokes after Joba committed such a blunder.

Earlier in the game, Chamberlain, who promised to stick his tongue out at Jeter if he tipped his helmet, lived up to his promise, although Jeter didn't seem to reciprocate the playful gesture.
